A recent wave of car thefts has Windsor police urging people to stop making it easy for the crooks.
Police said citizens must protect themselves from “opportunity theft” after 11 cars were stolen in a three-day period. The main problem, they said, is that people are leaving keys and fobs for push-button ignitions in unlocked vehicles.
“While you are sleeping these thieves, armed with tiny flashlights, are trying door handles and invariably become lucky,” police said in a news release.
Between July 15 and July 18, eleven vehicles were reported stolen to Windsor police.
In nine of those cases, police said the owners either left keys in unlocked vehicles or left the garage door open while they were in the back yard, giving thieves access to keys and other possessions.
Police said there are “far too many opportunity thefts” happening that could have been prevented. Along with locking the doors and taking the keys, police said you should also remove other belongings from your vehicle. If you do leave things in your car, including loose change, keep it out of sight.
If you see someone looking into vehicles, trying car doors or generally acting suspicious, call Windsor police at 519-255-6700 ext. 4211 or Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477 (TIPS). You can also leave tips online at catchcrooks.com or on the Windsor police Facebook page.
