An initiative by Windsor police and all other law enforcement agencies in the region will try to enhance the safety of area pharmacies.

Windsor Police Service announced on Thursday that an $84,000 provincial grant has made possible the Windsor-Essex Pharmacy Safety Initiative  — a multi-partner program to confront crime at neighbourhood pharmacies.

The first stage will involve surveying local pharmacies via questionnaires. According to Windsor police, there are a total of 147 pharmacies in our region — 100 of them in city limits.

In the second stage of the initiative, police officers will conduct assessments of each pharmacy, keeping in mind reduction and prevention of crime through the pharmacy’s environmental design.

Windsor police said assessing officers will use “a wide array of new and proven techniques and strategies” specifically meant to address criminal incidents and disorder at pharmacies.

Along with Windsor police, LaSalle police, Amherstburg police, and all OPP detachments of Essex County will be involved in this initiative, in cooperation with the Essex County Pharmacists Association.
