OPP say they have identified and charged those responsible for a string of recent thefts from vehicles in Tecumseh — and the accused are three 17-year-old youths.
Tecumseh OPP advised the public on Feb. 20 about a recent increase in vehicle break-ins in the area.
“These thefts are considered crimes of opportunity, and criminals will frequent several vehicles in a given area, most often entering and stealing from those that are left unlocked,” police stated at the time.
On Thursday, the OPP community street crime unit provided an update on their investigation.
One 17-year-old youth from Lakeshore is now facing three counts of theft (value under $5,000), one count of possession of stolen property, and one count of trespassing at night.
Two other 17-year-old youths have entered “extra judicial measures” under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
These measures are meant to hold a young person accountable without proceeding through court — typically applied to first-time, non-violent offenders.
The measures can range from a warning, to a caution, a referral to community service program or agency, a formal caution from the Crown, or an out-of-court sanction.
Essex County OPP remind the public to remain vigilant about keeping their vehicles and property secure.
