A memorial to Const. John Atkinson — Windsor’s first police officer to be murdered in the line of duty — has been stolen.

According to the Windsor police Property Crimes Unit, a wall-mounted plaque display dedicated to Atkinson has gone missing from a hallway in a building on the University of Windsor campus.

The theft was reported on Aug. 3 at the Chrysler Building at 401 Sunset Ave.

Building staff found broken glass and believe the plaque was taken sometime during the Civic Holiday weekend.

The display consisted of a shadow box containing a photo of Atkinson’s 2006 funeral service at the St. Denis Centre, along with a replica badge.

Anyone with information about this theft or vandalism is encouraged to call the Property Crimes Unit at 519-255-6700 ext. 4350.

Anonymous tips can be made via Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477 or www.catchcrooks.com.

Atkinson was fatally shot on May 5, 2006, when he interrupted a drug deal on Seminole Street at Pillette Road.
