Chatham-Kent police have arrested and charged two youths — one 16 years old, the other 15 — in relation to the assault on a senior who was standing vigil at a cenotaph before Remembrance Day.
Police said their investigation led to identification of the two suspects. They were located and taken into custody on Thursday.
The incident happened on the night of Nov. 10, around 9 p.m., at the Soldiers’ Memorial monument on King Street West in downtown Chatham.
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 642 had arranged for its members to stand vigil at the cenotaph in the week leading up to Remembrance Day.
According to police, a 66-year-old man from Dover Township was standing at the site when he was approached by three young people he didn’t know — two males and a female.
There was a verbal argument that resulted in the senior being assaulted.
The three strangers fled as police were being called.
The victim did not require medical attention.
The two accused have been released on a promise to appear in court in Chatham on Dec. 10.
