A fire in an apartment attached to a Wyandotte Street East store has been deemed suspicious in nature, say Windsor fire investigators.
Firefighters and police were called around 11:30 p.m. Sunday to a storefront building at 1344 Wyandotte St. E. due to reports of flames in one of the building’s residential units.
They arrived to find that the fire had already burnt itself out.
Occupants of the building’s six apartments had evacuated. Heavy smoke remained throughout the second floor.
An investigation determined that the fire had been contained to one unit.
Total damage — including smoke damage — is estimated at $120,000.
Chief fire prevention officer John Lee said the incident is considered suspicious and Windsor police will be investigating further.
